What Does a FAA Medical Exam Consist Of?

If you are a pilot, you need a regular FAA medical exam. Your family medicine doctor can help. Dr. Alancia Wynn at Wynn Family Medicine in Fairfax, VA, provides a wide range of medical services, including FAA medical examinations to help you.

What You Need To Know About an FAA Medical Exam

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, requires documentation you have received and passed a physical examination, in order for you to fly an aircraft. An FAA medical examination requires about 30 minutes. Your doctor can perform the physical, and it requires several steps, including:

  • Checking your eyesight and hearing
  • Performing a complete physical examination of your body including your head, torso, and extremities
  • Checking your vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and respiration
  • Testing with an electrocardiogram (EKG) to detect any abnormalities in heart rhythm or other heart functions
  • Checking your lung function to assess your ability to breathe deeply and expel the air from your lungs
  • Laboratory testing of cholesterol and hemoglobin
  • Imaging studies including a chest X-ray

To help your FAA examination appointment proceed smoothly, you need to bring a few things with you to your appointment. You should bring:

  • Your medical records
  • Your confirmation number
  • Form 8500-8
